Prompt and Reliable Delivery
After pumping propane for another company since 1947, my father, Bledsoe Harwell and two of his brother-in-laws, Leon Carter and Herman Smith, started Blue Flame Gas Company in 1957 in Bowden Junction, Georgia. They rented a small room in the Post Office. Leon continued to work at his "day" job because there was not enough income for all three of them. They purchased two used Bobtails (trucks to haul propane) and bought a small piece of land on the railroad where the "Bowden-Doogie", a small train engine, pulled the rail cars of propane in. My dad and uncles would unload the propane at night and deliver it during the day.
They eventually split up the company and my father opened Blue Flame Gas Company in Griffin, Georgia in October 1966. He took on a partner, Joe Steele, in 1972 and I became a partner in 1977. I purchased Joe's shares in 1993 and today own the company along with my brother, Dan Harwell.
